it was a typical florida summer afternoon for most floridia residents on june 23, 2012. the sun beaming warmly down on your skin, the hum of cicadas filling your ears in a seemingly loud but calming manner. obama is still president, and covid is far, far away in the future.
but not everyone was able to enjoy that bliss, at least not 50 year old darren rainey. he had been serving a 2-year sentence for possesion of cocaine at dade correctional institution in miami-dade county florida, and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia recently. he was locked away in a cell.
at around 7:30 pm rainey allegedly defecated in his cell and smeared his fecal matter all over himself and the cell. as a result, the prison guards sent him to the shower, and told him they would not let him out until he had completed cleaning himself. if youre unaware, prison showers are usually an open room that fits either one, or multiple inmates at a time, and usually have a door. it has been said by multiple inmates (not proven, as far as i know, however there is absolutely no explanation for how this crime happened if it wasnt) that this single-person shower had been rigged to not only lock from the outside, but to also have the water temperature be controlled from the outside by the guards.
anyhow, rainey was "accidentally" locked in the boiling hot shower by the guards. multiple inmates reported hearing screaming. after 2 hours of literally being boiled alive, rainey was found lying face up, his skin endlessly adorned in red patches that appeared to be burns. he was left in a shower that was at a temperature measured to be 160 °F (71 °C) for 2 hours.
inmates were made to clean the shower afterwards, and had to (allegedly) scrape raineys skin off of the floor.
a nurse took his temperature and it was all the way up at 102 degrees, and even almost 12 hours after his death, he was 94 degrees. thats nearly the average temperature of a LIVING, BREATHING human.
to me, and many others, something sounds fishy about the medical examiners conclusion. the results of the long-awaited autopsy stated that no burns were found ANYWHERE on raineys body, and determined that his death was a result of his mental illness and heart condition. how does one get BOILED alive and their cause of death is somehow their own issue??? raineys autopsy photos are public, and you can look them up, at your own discretion. however, looking at these photos you can clearly see skin coming off from seemingly nothing. this, according to once again, the autopsy report, this phenomena is known as 'slippage' and occurs when the skin is exposed to water or a warm and humid environment for a prolonged period. (surprised none of us floridians have gotten this yet lmao!!!)
in the words of howard simon, in an interview with the guardian, "To accept the medical examiner’s conclusion you have to believe that he accidentally locked himself in a shower, then turned up the water temperature to 180 degrees, accidentally boiled himself to death and all the while he was screaming for help,". to further back up the fact that this was clearly malpractice by both the examiner and the detectives, the prison has had a long history of beating, killing, and overall mistreating inmates. obviously, most of these reports had been ignored. im all for killing and beating pedophiles and rapists in prison, but most of these offenses were mental patients and such, considering this was the psych ward type unit in the prison.
i could never IMAGINE mistreating a mentally disturbed individual who couldnt even defend himself this poorly. those prison guards need to suffer the same fate rainey did.
